Hayatt Hospital : A Testament to what is Possible

The transfer of Hayatt Hospital to Amoud University on January 22, 2010 represents a new milestone for Amoud Foundation, its volunteers, donors, and well wishers. It was on a Saturday afternoon in mid 2006 when Amoud Foundation board members huddled in Irving , Texas , and put the idea of building a full-service hospital in Borama on the agenda. At the time, the foundation did not have much money and there were quite a few expressions of concern and caution at the prospect of taking on such a big project. At the conclusion of that fateful meeting, all members agreed that with effort and determination, anything was possible. The minutes of the meeting that day shows a rough outline of a plan enumerating action items, responsible parties, costs, estimated timelines, and a definition of what the final product should look like and what it will mean to the community.

For the next three years, board members and volunteers embarked on a relentless campaign of fundraising, knocking on doors, hosting events big and small, and educating the public about their goals. They refused to be discouraged by temporary setbacks or trivial distractions; they kept “their eyes on the prize”.  The fruit of that labor was realized on January 22, 2010 when the keys to Hayatt Hospital were handed over to Amoud University management, a testament to what is possible when even a small number of people, united by cause and common values, put mind and muscle together, and turn imaginations into concrete realities one can touch and feel. It is often said that “from little acorns grow giant oaks”. What was an empty piece of land not long ago has now been transformed into a full-service modern hospital with the potential and promise of making a difference in the lives of the community for generations to come.

The completion of Hayatt Hospital is not an end by itself. It is the beginning of a journey; part of a whole; the first step of a long term vision to make the Amoud valley a premier destination for education and healthcare, Rugta Cilmiga iyo Caafimaadka. The next few years would be crucial to the full realization of that vision. It will require a collective, sustained effort by the community, inside and outside. It will require the same level of concerted effort that made Amoud University the flagship institution it is today.
